It was important to the homeowners that the remodel fit in with the rest of the neighborhood and be less obvious than many of the other recent nearby remodels. The homeowners were looking for more space and better flow of the home to more efficiently meet their needs.

BEFORE

Extensive renovations including adding new space were made to the home. The scope of work on the first floor included: relocating the kitchen, remodeling the bathroom, adding a laundry room which was previously in the basement, adding a side entry mudroom, building a covered entry, and in the new space adding a living room and screened in porch.

FLOOR and ELEVATION PLANS

Second floor renovations included: a new master suite, converting an existing hall bath into a jack and jill bath for the kids, and adding a new HVAC unit.

The biggest challenge of the project was figuring out the kitchen space. The homeowners wanted a larger kitchen but doing that in its original space would have created a very narrow room. The idea to move it to the other side of the house allowed for the perfect space for an expanded kitchen with an ideal layout.

The homeowner could not have been more thrilled with the end result. The renovations turned out exactly as they wanted them. They loved working with their designer because he listened to what they wanted, and didn’t just try to pressure them into taking only his ideas. The front cedar porch is warm and inviting and has amazing curb appeal. The family love that they now have seating at the bar in the kitchen for quick meals and couldn’t be happier with all of their new bathrooms. The additional space allowed for all of the changes they wanted to make their home work perfectly for them now and down the road.

A High-End Kitchen with a Unique Design Challenge Sat, 08 Aug 2015 20:35:45 +0000 Kitchen Remodel in Olney, MD A semi-retired Olney, MD couple was looking for an updated kitchen space with lots of storage that was currently lacking. They had always dreamed of a kitchen with high-end finishes and felt that they were now ready to satisfy that dream. Their kitchen looked out onto beautiful backyard views, but the space wasn’t currently set up to take advantage of enjoying these views. They also wanted to incorporate a larger island so that it could accommodate a seating area.

The Challenge:
The biggest challenge with this project was figuring out what to do with a beam that ran across the ceiling of the room that had to stay in place. We suggested incorporating the beam into a tray ceiling with beautiful decorative molding. The clients were a little concerned with how this would turn out but loved it once they saw it completed.

The Result:
A relocated window and new window seat provide the homeowners access to great views and additional storage. Taller cabinets, a full pantry with pullout drawers, a larger island and a decorative glass cabinet all create an impressive look while adding the functionality the homeowners desired. One-of-a-kind, meticulously chosen Bordeaux granite tops create a sense of elegance, while a furniture-like refrigerator and dishwasher ensure a high-end and seamless look. The larger island provides an ideal alternative eating space. The homeowners couldn’t be more thrilled with their classically-styled yet updated, new space.

Smart Upgrades for your Kitchen / Fri, 05 Jun 2015 19:38:47 +0000 The kitchen has always been the heart of the home. More and more, it’s the brains as well, thanks to the emergence of smarter appliances, fixtures, and design practices. Here are smart upgrades to consider if you’re remodeling the kitchen—or just looking to improve its form, function, and feel.

A home for all your electronics. So-called charging stations are one of the fastest-growing features of today’s kitchen—and with good reason. Think about how many electronics you’re using in the kitchen at any one time, maybe face timing on your tablet while you download the evening’s dinner recipe on your laptop. We see homeowners incorporating charging stations into island countertops or tucking them into a cabinet drawer (made easier by electric outlets with built-in USB ports). There are also freestanding stations that can be kept out on the countertop, space permitting.

Appliances that cut down on guesswork. Convection steam ovens are gaining in popularity. One feature that is great about many of these appliances is their ability to cook dishes on their own, often more quickly than a conventional oven. Also cooking appliances with Wi-Fi capability are gaining in popularity such as wall ovens. This is helpful if you want to preheat the oven from the backyard or another part of the house.

Countertops that care for themselves. If your last countertop was made of granite, you probably had to seal it often, or else put up with staining. That’s not the case with quartz, which rivals granite’s popularity. Besides its sealant-free resistance to staining, quartz offers diverse design options, from bright colors to look alike natural stones.

Streamlined islands. Islands continue to benefit from design refinements and helpful accessories. In multi-cook kitchens, adding an induction cooktop to the island creates a second workstation. Induction is tops for speed and responsiveness, and these Cooktops are particularly suited for island installations, since their smooth tops are relatively easy to keep clean. However, having a nice open island top can be great for entertaining and day-to-day use like doing homework.
