They’re Back! Spring/Summer Interior Trends for 2021

We can’t ignore how lockdown has changed the way we see our homes and how they have become a place of refuge and sanctuary. Home is our safe place, so comfort and coziness are paramount. Colors are natural and earthy, drawn from nature, and shapes are rounded and cocooning. We all feel we deserve a bit of luxury too, so you can finally light that expensive scented candle you have been saving.

As our homes are still doubling up as offices, zoning and being organized are high on the list of design considerations – and don’t forget that all-important video call wall. We are also more aware of our fragile planet, so we want natural materials and fibers.
And let’s not forget our plant babies! Houseplants have become essential in home interiors and have become something we can nurture indoors, bringing the outside in.

Now that you’ve decided on pursuing your own addition or remodel, or maybe SVA Construction Corp is finishing up on your dream remodel, it’s time to start the fun part. Designing the look, colors, and atmosphere that will make your home a work of art. We invite you to contact SVA Construction Corp|Design Remodel Build and speak with our experienced and certified interior designers for more tips and ideas. For now, here’s a start with some hot trends for home interiors- 2021.

Cottagecore
This is an extension of Granny Chic and has been all over instagram for a while. It’s all about a romantic interpretation of rural life and simpler times, using colors, patterns and details your Granny might have had.

A traditional-shape jade velvet sofa, timeless armchair and full-length curtains hung from wooden poles (something we haven’t see for a while) all add to the overall style, with modern pieces such as the side tables, large footstool, round mirror and statement lighting bringing it up to date. It’s a nostalgic and comforting look.

Japandi
Just as it sounds, it’s a blend of Japanese and Scandi styles and couldn’t be more different to Cottagecore. It’s a pared-back aesthetic focusing on simple shapes, rattan and natural wood. Stoneware and ceramics are particularly important for this look, in organic shapes, mainly plain in color and with a homemade feel. Boucle is back with a vengeance on upholstery and adds texture and softness. Colors are muted – grey and white, with plain walls, and instead of flowers, place tall, elegant grasses in vases or in baskets.

Earth Tones
Dulux Color Of The Year 2021 is ‘Brave Ground’ and works perfectly for how we feel right now. Calming colors in earthy shades that take us back to nature. This warm, natural tone is the perfect base to add sage green (which we are seeing a lot of this year too, especially in kitchens), palest pink and inky blues. Earth colors are empowering, and are said to give us the courage to embrace change. It’s the perfect shade for any room in the house and makes this bedroom feel like the perfect sanctuary from the world.

Pantone Color of The Year 2021
Pantone colors are industry standard color codes that stand for a specific shade, and this year the colors are ‘Illuminating’ yellow and ‘Ultimate Grey’. It’s a great combination of a soft grey neutral with a punchy bright yellow. Pantone says: “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, the two shades together create a strong and positive vibe.” Yellow is also the color of happiness and we could all do with a bit of that right now. This stand-out sofa is in velvet which has become our favorite fabric for upholstery and it makes a fabulous statement against the soft grey wall, guaranteed to lift your spirits.

All The Curves
There is a significant move towards rounded shapes in interiors, particularly furniture like this cocooning corner sofa from DFS. There are no hard edges and the round shapes are kinder and more welcoming, perfect for now. This sofa is in boucle, popular in the 50’s now re-invented for a modern audience, and plays on tactility and texture for softness and depth. Complete the look with a round rug, footstool, screen – even cushions.

On Display
Being at home so much makes us look around at what we have and see it in a different light, creating displays and moving things around for a better look. There is something soothing about choosing favorite pieces and arranging them, then re-arranging them, or adding new pieces. Floating shelves are the perfect way to achieve this and of course it makes the perfect Zoom background.

A Touch of Luxe
Amongst all the doom and gloom, we need to cheer ourselves up and sometimes a bit of luxury is the perfect solution. Luxe is a trend for this season for that very reason, something that makes you smile and makes you feel special. Changing your cushions or small accessories is an inexpensive way to give your home a lift – after all who doesn’t like a bit of shimmer and shine? The retro look of these pleated cushions is fabulous and taps into Cottagecore too.
